Cancer diagnostics startup Foundation Medicine Inc. has appointed Michael J. Pellini as president and CEO. Founding CEO Alexis Borisy, a partner at Third Rock Ventures, will take the role of chairman of the board of directors for the Cambridge company.
Pellini previously worked as president and chief operating officer of Clarient, a GE Healthcare company. Earlier posts include a role as vice president, life sciences at Safeguard Scientifics Inc., and president and CEO of Genomics Collaborative Inc. He earned a medical degree from Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University, an MBA from Drexel University and a bachelor’s degree from Boston College.
Borisy was named Foundation Medicine’s first CEO in February 2010. He is the founder and former CEO of CombinatoRx Inc., a pain and inflammation drug developer that merged with Neuromed Pharmaceuticals Inc.
Launched in April 2010 by Third Rock Ventures, Foundation Medicine landed a $25 million Series A funding round at the time. The company is developing a diagnostic test aimed at personalized cancer treatment.
