Sony data breach may top TJX

By Galen Moore

It’s a distinction TJX would probably like to be rid of. The breach confirmed by Sony Corp. (NYSE: SNE) Tuesday may have affected 77 million users, shattering TJX’s record for the largest customer data theft ever.

TJX Companies Inc. (NYSE: TJX) has ranked first on that list since 2007, when hackers stole 45.7 million credit and debit card numbers by snooping on the Framingham retail company’s wireless computer systems.

On Tuesday, Sony acknowledged an attack earlier this month may have affected all the users of its Playstation Network and Qriocity networked game services. Bloomberg News puts that number at 77 million.

Sony said the breach gave an intruder access to personal information including name, address, email address, birthdate, passwords, security question answers and credit card data. Sony said Tuesday it has provided user names and contact information to major U.S. credit bureaus and encouraged users to monitor credit-card activity, and to call the credit bureaus and have their files flagged for fraud alert.
