Spire building solar power system for Western Mass. school

By Kyle Alspach

Spire Corp. (Nasdaq: SPIR) said Friday that it has started construction of a 2-megawatt solar power system at a private high school in Western Massachusetts.

The Bedford-based company said the project is located over eight acres at the Berkshire School in Sheffield. The company is constructing the system with developer PowerPlay Solar.

The solar field will provide 40 percent of the school’s electricity needs, Spire said.

The project is the latest largescale solar development in Massachusetts, as the solar power industry trends toward multi-megawatt projects. New England’s largest completed solar power project is a 1.8-megawatt array on a former industrial site in Pittsfield, and Western Massachusetts Electric Co. plans to construct a 4.2-megawatt solar power project in Springfield.
