IRobot inks $7.6M deal with Army

By Galen Moore

IRobot Corp. (Nasdaq: IRBT) has signed a $7.6 million contract with the U.S. Army to deliver 50 of its model 310 small unmanned ground vehicles (SUGV), along with spare parts.

It’s the second such announcement in a matter of weeks. On March 31, the Bedford robotics company announced a similar deal for 76 units of the model 320 SUGV, a similarly sized device. Unlike the 320, the 310 is equipped with a robotic arm. It weighs about 35 pounds.

The SUGVs, developed in tandem with Boeing, are a smaller and lighter version of the company’s PackBot. The 310 is primarily used for bomb removal, but the robots in the current order will be used by combat engineers and marines, iRobot said.
