Carbonite co-founder leaves CTO role

By Galen Moore

Carbonite Inc. co-founder Jeff Flowers has stepped down as CTO of the Boston consumer data storage company and will be replaced from within by former architect and manager Eric Golin.

Flowers will stay with the company as chief architect, said CEO and co-founder David Friend in an email. Flowers, who is on vacation this week, decided he wanted to focus his total attention on “big picture technical issues,” Friend said. “I think he was tired of being in all the CTO meetings and doing so many design reviews. He’s the brains behind our scalable back end.”

Friend has discussed taking Carbonite public as early as 2011;  Golin has public-company CTO experience at Broadvision, where he worked from 1994 to 2001. He’s also held the CTO post at the Content Objects Inc. and the baby-boomer social media startup Eons Inc. He started at Carbonite in 2008.

“He’s brilliant, practical, organized, patient, and a pleasure to work with,” Friend said of Golin. “We hired him knowing that he would move into this job at Carbonite in a few years. Jeff thinks he’s one of the two or three best people he’s ever hired.”
