Co-founder Rodney Brooks will step down from his seat on iRobot Corp.’s board of directors as of May, the company disclosed in a regulatory filing yesterday. IRobot holds its annual meeting of stockholders on May 26, and Brooks will not stand for re-election when his term expires on the date of the meeting.
Brooks co-founded the Bedford maker of military, industrial and consumer robots in 1990 with fellow MIT roboticists Colin Angle and Helen Greiner. Angle, iRobot’s CEO, is the only one of the three still with the company in a daily operating role.
Brooks left iRobot in 2008 to found Heartland Robotics, a startup developing robots for manufacturing use, which has raised $32 million from Bezos Expeditions, Charles River Ventures, and Highland Capital Partners. In January, Heartland announced plans to move from Cambridge to Boston’s Innovation District .
Greiner still holds a seat on the iRobot board, although she has also left her day-to-day role to found a new company. In 2008, she founded CyPhy Works, which is developing unmanned aerial surveillance robots. CyPhy is funded with $1.8 million from General Catalyst Partners, and a $2.4 million National Institute of Standards and Technology grant.
Brooks could not be reached immediately for comment.
