IRobot sending military robots to Japan in relief effort

By James M. Connolly

Bedford robot maker iRobot Corp. said today that it is sending four of its military robots to Japan to help first responders in the earthquake and tsunami relief effort.

The company said it is sending two PackBots, which normally are used for tasks such as bomb disposal, and two Warrior robots, which are designed to carry heavy payloads to Japan. The robots also will be made available to provide hazardous materials surveillance at the troubled Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station.

Six iRobot volunteers will accompany the devices on the mission.

In December, iRobot co-founder and CEO Colin Angle was recognized by Mass High Tech with the Education Innovation Award during the MHT Tech Citizenship event.
