Vertex plans to grow epilepsy drug trial
By Eric Convey, Boston Business Journal
Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc. (Nasdaq: VRTX) said it will conduct a broader trial of a potential drug against epilepsy following positive results in a Phase 2 study.
The Cambridge pharmaceutical company said VX-765 proved as safe as a placebo and also met certain clinical benchmarks in a study involving 60 patients with epilepsy that had proved stubborn against other treatments.
In a prepared statement, Vertex Chief Scientific Officer Peter Mueller said: “The use of anti-inflammatory medicines is a completely new way to approach the treatment of epilepsy, and this study was an important first step toward understanding whether VX-765 could help people with this disease.”
A broader trial could begin in fall 2011, the company said.
The company confirmed in January that it is planning to move to Boston’s Fan Pier on the South Boston waterfront.
