Retroficiency brings in $800K

By Kyle Alspach

Retroficiency Inc., a Boston startup that has developed energy efficiency software, said it has raised $800,000 in a funding round led by Worcester’s World Energy Solutions Inc.

Retroficiency says it offers a web-based software platform for analyzing the potential benefits of energy efficiency measures at commercial buildings. The platform is available to energy service companies, facility managers, large commercial property owners and others who are “seeking to more rapidly, cost effectively and accurately qualify energy solutions across their portfolio of properties,” the company said.

Retroficiency says its software allows users to evaluate thousands of energy conservation measures in minutes.

World Energy Solutions (Nasdaq: XWES), best known for running online exchanges for energy procurement and carbon emissions trading, said its “strategic investment” into Retroficiency comes in anticipation of accelerating demand for efficiency services at commercial buildings. The investment “opens the door to new opportunities for us in regulated markets,” World Energy said.

The funding round also included participation from angel investors Jean Hammond and Jill Preotle, both early investors in Cambridge-based car sharing firm ZipCar Inc., Retroficiency said.

The company was founded in 2009 by CEO Bennett Fisher and CTO Bryan Long, who both hold MBAs from MIT’s Sloan School of Management. Fisher was co-president of both the Venture Capital and Private Equity Club and the Innovation Club at Sloan, according to the Retroficiency website.
