Zipcar adds ex-eBay CEO Whitman to board

By Michelle Lang

Zipcar is cultivating its online network with the appointment of Meg Whitman, former CEO of eBay, to the Cambridge company’s board of directors. She takes over the seat from board member and Zipcar investor Jim Gerson.

Whitman, who ran an unsuccessful bid for governor of California in 2010, served as CEO of eBay from 1998 to 2008. Under her tenure, the online auction site grew from 30 employees to more than 15,000 employees and from $4 million in annual revenue to almost $8 billion, according to a news release today from Zipcar.

“During her time at eBay, Meg helped to create and define the category of online auctions, which did not exist prior to her leadership,” said Zipcar CEO Scott Griffith, a 2009 Mass High Tech All-Star.  “Clearly, she will be a tremendous asset to Zipcar as we continue to grow and evolve our global car sharing network.”

Zipcar, which has filed intentions to go public, said in December that it had completed a Series G financing of $21 million, led by Meritech Capital Partners.

The company said in January that it is adding plug-in vehicles to three locations of its car-sharing fleet, including Boston/Cambridge.
