Obama touring TechBoston Academy in Dorchester next week

By Rodney Brown

President Barack Obama will visit TechBoston Academy in Dorchester next Tuesday when he is in town for a fundraiser.

The president will be accompanied by Melinda Gates of the Gates Foundation and Education Secretary Arne Duncan. The report, since confirmed, first appeared on Boston.com, which cited an unnamed White House official.

Founded in 2002, TechBoston Academy, a division of Boston Public Schools, is a pilot high school that offers a college preparatory course path, “which includes interdisciplinary project-based learning, where technology is the bridge that connects the students to their learning experiences,” according to the academy website. In 2009, the school expanded to include middle school grades, 6 through 8, in part to help students achieve higher scores on the MCAS tests.

In addition to technology companies like Cisco Systems Inc. and Dell Inc., TBA is backed by organizations such as The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

At the end of January, Pres. Obama announced the new Startup America Partnership, a White House-backed effort to promote innovation entrepreneurship that has been funded by the Kauffman Foundation and the Case Foundation. Among the many partners are local incubators MassChallenge, BetaSpring and TechStars Boston. Startup America Partnership’s stated goal is to “celebrate, inspire, and accelerate high-growth entrepreneurship throughout the nation,” according to the partnership’s website.
