By Michelle Lang

Hybrivet Systems Inc., a Natick developer of contaminant detection systems, has been acquired by 3M Company, of St. Paul, Minn. No financial terms of the deal were disclosed.

Hybrivet develops LeadCheck Swabs, a commercially available lead detection tool recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Its other detectors of contaminants and toxins include products for identifying the presence of hexavalent chromium ions, mercury, cadmium, nickel, copper and arsenic.

The Natick company, founded in 1987 by Marcia Stone, has 11 employees. 3M has about 80,000 employees in more than 65 countries.

According to a news release from 3M, the acquisition opens the company up to a commercial market for testing paints for lead.
