SkillSoft buys assets of 50 Lessons

By Rodney H. Brown

SkillSoft plc, the Dublin-based e-learning company that has its primary operations in Nashua, N.H., has acquired the assets of U.K. video firm 50 Lessons Ltd. for an undisclosed amount.

According to John Ambrose, SkillSoft’s senior vice president of strategy, corporate development and emerging business, buying the assets of 50 Lessons allows SkillSoft to provide “the element of story-telling, which is considered by many to be a very effective and engaging technique for broadening business perspective.”

That comes from 50 Lessons’ content, which is story-based business lessons in the form of video interviews with many of the top executives in the world. Among the providers of lessons are Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia, Professor Clayton Christensen of Harvard Business School, Anders Dahlvig from IKEA, and Neville Isdell from the Coca-Cola Co.

SkillSoft did not say in their press release if any of the employees of 50 Lessons would be joining the company after the purchase closes.

In April 2010, SkillSoft worked out a revised deal with SSI Investments III Ltd. for its acquisition for $11.25 per SkillSoft share. The acquisition price was originally announced in February of that year at $10.80 per SkillSoft share. SSI Investments III is a new company formed by Bain Capital Partners LLC, Berkshire Partners LLC and Advent International Corp.
