Raytheon lands contract for space surveillance system

By Michelle Lang

Raytheon Co. has won a $107 million deal from the U.S. Air Force in order to move its design of a Space Fence system through a Milestone B point and into the manufacturing and engineering phase of development.

The Waltham-based defense giant said in a news release today that the contract is the second part of a multiphase deal that will have the company deliver up to three S-band radars in the U.S. Space Surveillance Network.

The Space Fence design, a net-centric sensor, is expected to help detect smaller space debris and objects “to meet warfighter space situational awareness requirements,” Raytheon said in the release. The contract will have the company produce a radar prototype to determine cost, scheduling and technical issues that will support a Milestone B approval.

Raytheon has 72,000 employees worldwide.
