A123 lands 20MW energy storage order

By Kyle Alspach

A123 Systems Inc. (Nasdaq:AONE) said it has received an order to expand an energy storage system for the electric grid in Northern Chile.

The Watertown-based company received the order for a 20-megawatt lithium-ion battery system from the energy storage arm of AES Corp. (NYSE:AES). The dollar value of the order was not released. A123 had previously provided a 12-megawatt system to AES for a Northern Chile installation in 2009.

A123 manufactures the trailer-sized grid battery systems in Hopkinton and plans to open a facility in Westborough — the company’s third location in Massachusetts — to focus on research and development for the grid batteries.

AES will deploy the A123 batteries at the new 500-megawatt Angamos power plant. The storage system will provide contingency services to maintain the stability of the electric grid in Northern Chile, a key mining area, A123 said in a press release.

The system continuously monitors the condition of the grid and if a “significant frequency deviation occurs,” such as the loss of a generator or transmission line, the energy storage system can rapidly provide up to 20 megawatts of power, according to the company.
