Avecia Biotechnology acquired by Japanese firm

By Rodney H. Brown

Avecia Biotechnology Inc., a DNA- and RNA-based therapeutics firm in Milford, has been acquired by Japanese materials manufacturer Nitto Denko Corp.

No financial terms of the deal were disclosed. The acquisition, which was conducted through Nitto’s New Jersey subsidiary Nitto Americas Inc., is expected to strengthen Nitto’s nucleic acid drug offerings, according to a news release from the Japanese firm.

Avecia is a large-scale manufacturer and developer of nucleic acid drugs, which Nitto officials said are used to change gene expression. Nitto Denko Technical Corp., an Oceanside, Calif.-based subsidiary of the Japanese company, also focuses on nucleic acid drug technology.
