Stromedix lands $2M, looks for $15.5M in new funding

By Rodney Brown

Cambridge biotech Stromedix Inc. has taken in $2 million of a planned $15.5 million new financing round, according to federal documents.

Stromedix, which focuses on creating therapies for fibrosis and fibrotic organ failure, had previously raised just inder $30 million between a $4.4 million Series A round in 2007 and a $25 million Series B round in April of 2008.

While the documents filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission did not name the specific investors in the latest round, previous backers of Stromedix include New Leaf Venture Partners of New York City and Menlo Park, Calif., Boston area firms Bessemer Venture Partners and Atlas Venture, along with Frazier Healthcare Ventures of Seattle and Red Abbey Venture Partners of Baltimore.

Last November, Stromedix acquired exclusive rights to a compound, called αvβ5, developed at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF). The compound has been identified as playing a role in acute and chronic organ failure.

In August 2008, Stromedix won orphan drug status from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for its drug STX-100, a treatment for chronic allograft nephropathy, a cause of transplant failure in patients with kidney transplants. Stromedix licensed STX-100, a humanized monoclonal antibody, from Biogen Idec Inc.
