Epizyme enters lucrative GSK alliance

By Michelle Lang

Cambridge biopharmaceutical firm Epizyme Inc. has entered into a cancer therapeutics development and commercialization alliance with GlaxoSmithKline worth potentially more than $630 million in milestone payments.

The agreement calls for Cambridge-based Epizyme to conduct research into small molecule therapeutics that target a class of epigenetic enzymes, called histone methyltransferases (HMTs), in treating cancer. Epizyme will be responsible for the research of epigenetic enzymes, while GlaxoSmithKline will cover development and commercialization of the epigenetic enzymes, which may enable personalized cancer and disease treatment.

Epizyme will receive an initial $20 million upfront payment from GSK, in addition to research funding. It also stands to receive in excess of $630 million in milestone payments if the enzymes reach commercialization, in which case Epizyme may also take in further royalties stemming from net product sales.

Epizyme was one of three Boston-area biotechs, and one of 11 biotechs nationally, to receive a $1 million research award from the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation under the MMRF’s Biotech Investment Awards Program, announced last week.
