Allurent, not quite dead yet, sells to Jenzabar

By Rodney Brown

Allurent Inc., the e-commerce software maker declared dead by the Boston Globe last month, has been purchased by Jenzabar Inc. for an undisclosed amount.

According to Jenzabar, Allurent will move from its Cambridge offices at Dogpatch Labs to Jenzabar’s Boston headquarters in the Prudential Center following the close of the deal. Officials said Jenzabar will continue to support Allurent’s customers and will pump money into further development of its Software-as-a-Service and cloud-based technologies.

Jenzabar will also expand the Allurent offerings from its main focus on e-commerce and retail to Jenzabar’s primary market, higher education, officials said.

Allurent had raised at least $13 million from investors including Waltham venture firm Polaris Venture Partners and Pennsylvania-based GSI Commerce. The company was founded by Joe Chung, previously a co-founder at Art Technology Group, and who is reportedly working on a new startup, Redstar Ventures. Chung was a Mass High Tech All-Star honoree in 2007.

Jenzabar moved into its new headquarters at the Prudential Center a little more than a year ago, and at the time said it was planning beef up its staff level by 35 percent. The company counts among the customers for its college administration software institutions Ohio Wesleyan University, Brigham Young University–Idaho and Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.
