Carbonite Inc. is going after the small and midsize business (SMB) segment, announcing the hire of executives and managers from Intuit, NameMedia and PlumChoice who will head up a newly separate business division of the venture-backed cloud storage company.
Peter Lamson, formerly of NameMedia and Monstermoving.com, joins Carbonite as general manager of the newly created Small Business Group. Bill Phelan, formerly group product manager at Intuit, joined Carbonite in June 2010 as vice president of product, the company announced today. Richard Surace, formerly senior vice president of operations at SMB IT services software maker PlumChoice, has been named Carbonite’s vice president of services.
David Friend, CEO of Boston-based Carbonite, has said he’s looking at an initial public offering of stock some time in 2011. This summer, he talked with the Boston Business Journal about plans to grow Carbonite’s head count, 170 at the time, by 20 percent. The company has hit cash-flow positive, according to Friend, and is backed with over $70 million in capital from Crosslink Capital of San Francisco, Calif.; Performance Equity of Stamford, Conn.; Menlo Ventures of Menlo Park, Calif.; and CommonAngels of Lexington.
Carbonite also announced the internal promotion of Swami Kumaresan, formerly vice president of marketing, to general manager of the newly separated consumer group.
