Dimdim sells to Salesforce.com for $31M

By Rodney Brown

Dimdim Inc. of Lowell has been acquired by San Francisco-based Salesforce.com in a cash deal worth $31 million. Enterprise cloud computing company Salesforce said it was interested in Dimdim’s completely cloud-based real-time communication technology.

Venture-backed Dimdim had taken in less than $9 million in two rounds of funding, from backers including Draper Richards LP of San Fransisco, Index Ventures of Switzerland, and Nexus India Capital, which operates offices in California and India. The most recent round was a $6 million Series B funding in July of 2008.

Dimidim was found in 2007, and landed its first round that same year, bringing in $2.4 million in Series A funding. In addition to getting  access to Dimdim’s technology, Salesforce.com officials said the get “a team of world-class developers experienced in building cloud-based collaboration services.” Salesforce.com plans to integrate the Dimdim real-time communication capabilities into its existing Chatter collaboration platform.

Originally based on open source code, Dimdim will maintain an open source version on SourceForge.net after the close of the sale, according to the company’s website, but it will no longer be contributing to the project.

Dimdim was co-founded by CEO D.D. Ganguly and Prakash Khot. Ganguly served as vice president of product development for California-based CA beginning in 2001, after it acquired Woburn-based Advanced Internet Management Inc., for which Ganguly was founder and CEO. There was no word on whether or not the top executives would be taking long-term roles at Salesforce.com.
