Oasys Water Inc. plans to open a new R&D facility in South Boston on Thursday and move its headquarters from Cambridge to a separate location in South Boston in January, the company said.
Oasys is developing a water desalination process that aims to use less energy than existing methods. The process would convert salt water into drinking water using reverse osmosis, and save on the cost of electricity needed to produce clean water. Oasys is aiming to commercialize its system in mid-2011, according to Lisa Sorgini, vice president of strategy and marketing.
The company’s new R&D facility will be located in the Boston Marine Industrial Park at 7 Tide St. Boston Mayor Thomas Menino plans to join Oasys CEO Aaron Mandell for the grand opening of the facility on Thursday at 11 a.m.
The new headquarters will be located a block from the R&D facility, inside the Boston Design Center facility at 21 Drydock Ave., the company said.
The Boston Redevelopment Authority noted in a press release that Oasys will be the latest clean technology firm to locate in the South Boston “innovation district.” The company will join inverter company Satcon Technology Corp., energy storage developer FastCAP Systems Corp. and energy efficiency retrofit firm Next Step Living Inc.
The new R&D facility will consolidate existing pilot activities, which have been taking place in both Massachusetts and California, Sorgini said. The new facility will also add space to conduct full-scale tests and system assembly, she said.
Oasys is focusing on high-salinity applications initially, and the systems are being testing by numerous groups, Sorgini said. “We now have systems running that treat seawater to produce potable water,” she said in an e-mail.
The company currently has 10 full-time employees and six temporary employees. Five full-timers and all of the part-timers will work at the R&D facility, Sorgini said. The company plans to offer full-time jobs to five to eight people in the next 30 days, she said.
Oasys received $10 million in venture capital in February 2009 from Flagship Ventures of Cambridge, Advanced Technology Ventures of Waltham and Draper Fisher Jurvetson of California.
