MHT Startup Adviser: Entrepreneurs, begin at another startup

The Startup Adviser cut the cord with the cable company, and so instead of HBO and Celtics basketball, it was a weekend of watching video interviews with entrepreneurs on YouTube. Here are a few highlights:
In a PlusConf video, Todd Garland talked about how he started BuySellAds while working full-time at HubSpot. (Fair warning: the site wants your email to let you watch the video.)
“Anyone wanting to start their own company, first go work for another company. Watching HubSpot go from 5 to 50 people in 1 year was incredible. That helped show me that this was something I could do.”
The launch site for startup blogger Eric Ries’ book went up this week. In a surprise move, he’s calling it ‘The Lean Startup.’ In this April interview with fellow tech blogger Robert Scoble, Ries lays out the problem he’s aiming to solve.
“If the product was something that basically people didn’t want, the company didn’t find out until it was way too late. And so I’ve had friends, the most talented people I know, spend years of their life, building something that fundamentally nobody wanted….That’s an inappropriate reason for companies to fail.”
Mobile Metrix founder Melanie Edwards talked to Fast Company about how she started a business doing neighborhood-based market research in developing countries. As it turned out, there was some market research involved:
“Start reaching out to people who work in that area, who are experts in that area to start talking to them and get an idea, and really find out, is this really an issue, is this something that resonates with you. And then you start getting birds of a feather around you. And before long, if you’re all interested in the same problem, popcorn’s going to start to go off and ideas are going to fly, and you’re going to start coming up with solutions that are phenomenal.”
