A new Rhode Island nonprofit named Mobile Beacon has launched with the plan to offer unlimited 4G mobile broadband services exclusively to educational institutions and other nonprofits for $10 per month.
Formed earlier this year, Educational Broadband Service Agency LLC of North Providence is doing business as Mobile Beacon, offering the 4G service using the WiMax offering from Clearwire Corp. that launched in the Providence and Boston areas in September. The cost of the service beyond $10 per month will be subsidized through donations and fundraising by Mobile Beacon.
Mobile Beacon was spun out of a 501(c)3 nonprofit, the Johnston, R.I.-based North American Catholic Educational Programming Foundation. Both the NACEPF and Mobile Beacon were founded and are run by John Primeau. The NACEPF has been providing broadcast and now online religious educational programming for more than 20 years, officials said.
Clearwire’s CLEAR 4G service is expected to run at speeds between 3 Megabits per second and 6 Mbps, with bursts of up to 10 Mbps. In tests of the Sprint Epic 4G phone on the Clearwire-based Sprint 4G service, Mass High Tech found 4G speeds running between 2.49 Mbps and 3.08 Mbps.
The Clear service is available in 62 markets around the country. While the company currently offers an unlimited data plan, Mobile Beacon did state that its own ability to offer that to its nonprofit customers is based on Clearwire and subject to any currrent restrictions or changes Clearwire makes in the future.
