Nuance won’t comment on Woz saying Apple bought them

By Galen Moore

If Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak is correct, Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) has acquired Burlington-based Nuance Communications Inc. (Nasdaq: NUAN). Wozniak told a tech blog that the deal had happened in a video posted late yesterday.

Nuance today declined to comment on Wozniak’s words. In an e-mail, spokesman Richard Mack called the statement “speculation.”

Wozniak spoke about Apple acquiring Nuance in the context of Siri, a speech-to-text company and competitor to Nuance that Apple did acquire in April.  Last week, Wozniak said he was misquoted in a Dutch newspaper article that reported he had predicted Google’s Android operating system would eventually “dominate” Apple’s iPhone in the smart phone market.  However, the Nuance comment was captured clearly on video.

Yesterday, Nuance reported fourth-quarter earnings. No mention was made of a merger with Apple, however in early trading this morning, Nuance stock is already trading up four percent over yesterday’s close. The overall Nasdaq index, by comparison, is down about 1.4 percent.

Apple’s public relations office could not be reached. A voicemail message informed callers the office is closed for the week due to the Thanksgiving holiday.
