MHT Startup Adviser: Go ahead, start a startup

By Galen Moore

HubSpot co-founder and CTO Dharmesh Shah had this widely read post last week, offering 14 reasons why YOU (yes, you) should start a startup. While Startup Adviser will withhold comment on whether “there’s a good chance” your startup will impact a lot of people, one thing is certainly true: it’s easier now than it ever has been before.

“It used to be a very old boys club or dark art, when it came to entrepreneurship. It used to cost a ton of money to go to seminars and buy books full of snake oil. It still exists, but people are starting to learn better.”

Now that you’ve decided to embark on your wild mission. Soon you’re going to think about finding your first customer. Poornima Vijayashanker of Bizeebee knows what he’s going to look like (via @davemcclure).

“In addition to having time, make sure the first customer is patient and can tolerate kinks in your product or service.  Be sure to set expectations that your business is a work in progress. Hopefully they are willing to wade through the various phases. The right first customer will enjoy the process, and it will be rewarding for both of you.”

Not having any luck finding a first subscriber who fits that description? Or one with any description? Or a pulse? Maybe it’s your front-page sign-up form (via @HNComments).

From the comments:
“When shoppers walk into a store, there needs to be a threshold where they can acquaint themselves with the surroundings. Anything that is too close to the entrance gets ignored by most shoppers as they walk in. Sites with sign-ups on the front page feel that way to me.”
