Black Duck keeps acquiring with SpikeSource buyout

By Michelle Lang

Black Duck Software Inc. continues its growth spurt, following its October buyout of Ohloh.net, with its latest acquisition of SpikeSource, a software developer in the field of security vulnerability and application component identification.

With the buyout of the Mountain View, Calif.-based company, Black Duck reported in a press release that it gains SpikeForge, made up of 17 open-source projects; Developer Community Forum, a forum associated with SpikeSource open source software projects and technology; and SpikeInsight, the company’s cloud-based tool for assessing security vulnerability and automating application component identification.

Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Waltham-based Black Duck makes software designed to help enterprise customers negotiate the world of free, open-source software offerings, analyzing code for compatibility with their existing systems.

Its October buy of open-source online resource Ohloh.net was worth almost $3 million and was directed at getting Black Duck into the hearts and minds of software developers far below the enterprise IT budget decision makers, in hopes their adoption of open-source software will lead to more sales.
