Raytheon Co. has won a $240 million contract to produce components of the Aegis weapons system for naval destroyers, the company announced Wednesday.
Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems, the company’s Tewksbury-based arm, will provide the production, engineering and support services for the components, which will be used by four ship sets in the Arleigh Burke class of destroyers.
The components include radar and fire control system equipment, which Waltham-based Raytheon said is crucial to the Aegis weapon system’s ability to track and defend against multiple threats, including planes and missiles.
Work under the contract will be performed at two locations in Massachusetts — Raytheon’s Surveillance and Sensors Center in Sudbury and Integrated Air Defense Center in Andover. The Seapower Capability Center in Portsmouth, R.I., will also perform work, Raytheon (NYSE: RTN) said.
The contract contains options for additional work, according to Raytheon.
Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems previously won contracts related to Aegis worth $16 million in 2009 and $45 million in 2007.
