EMC buys storage virtualization firm Bus-Tech

By Kyle Alspach

EMC Corp. has acquired a Bedford-based storage virtualization firm, which will join EMC’s Backup Recovery Systems division, the company announced Wednesday.

The firm, Bus-Tech Inc., provides virtual tape library technology, which is used to store and retrieve mainframe tape data. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed by EMC (NYSE: EMC).

The Hopkinton-based storage giant said it has been collaborating with Bus-Tech since 2004, and that the company’s technology will complement EMC’s disk library and deduplication storage systems.

Bus-Tech was founded in 1987 and introduced its virtual tape solutions for the mainframe in 2002, which have been deployed in 17 countries, according to the company. The company’s offerings allow mainframe users to eliminate tape infrastructure and embrace disk-based backup solutions, EMC said.
