Robert Kamen, a former executive-in-residence at Oxford BioScience Partners, has joined life sciences-focused venture capital firm Third Rock Ventures LLC in the same role.
As executive-in-residence at Third Rock, Kamen will help find and develop new companies, the firm reported in a news release this morning.
Kamen’s background in biologics was cited by Third Rock partner Mark Levin as “an asset” to the firm, given its current portfolio companies Eleven Biotherapeutics, Ablexis and CytomX Therapeutics.
Prior to his role at Oxford BioScience, Kamen was president of Abbott Bioresearch Center, the Worcester-based biologics manufacturing business of Abbott Laboratories, and as president of BASF Bioresearch Corp. through its acquisition by Abbott Laboratories in 2001. Co-founder and chairman of BioAssets Development Corp., which is to be acquired by Cephalon Inc. for $12.5 million, he also sits on the boards of Opsonic Therapeutics, GlaxoSmithKline, Lycera Corp. and Harbour Antibodies.
Founded in 2007 and based in Boston with a new office in San Francisco, Third Rock Ventures announced in September that it had closed on its oversubscribed Fund II, raising $426 million. Its portfolio companies include Ablexis LLC of San Francisco, Afferent Pharmaceuticals of San Mateo, Calif., Agios Pharmaceuticals of Cambridge, Alnara Pharmaceuticals of Cambridge, bluebird bio of Cambridge, Constellation Pharmaceuticals of Cambridge, DC Devices of Andover, Edimer Pharmaceuticals of Cambridge, Eleven Biotherapeutics of Cambridge, Foundation Medicine of Cambridge, Nine Point Medical, Seventh Sense Biosystems of Cambridge and Zafgen Inc. of Cambridge.
