MITX taps Communispace exec Kleiman as new president

Digital marketing industry group MITX, the Massachusetts Interactive Technology Exchange, has named Debi Kleiman, vice president of product marketing and sales operations at Communispace Corp., as its new president, replacing outgoing president Kiki Mills. Mills confirmed the news today.

Communispace is a Watertown-based online consumer market research company. Kleiman’s background includes stints as a marketing consultant for Gillette, Oral B Division at Procter & Gamble; a senior product manager, marketing at Welch’s; and global brand development, brand manager, marketing, non carb at The Coca-Cola Co.

Kleiman said she is still working through her transition from Communispace and likely won’t take over the MITX job until “mid-November-ish.” She did say she was excited to begin.

“It’s such an exciting organization and such an exciting time to be in this space right now,” Kleiman said. “For me, MITX was this hub for all this amazing activity that is going on in the Hub and beyond. It’s the connective tissue for all these amazing ideas.”

Kleiman said the first job will be to listen to what the MITX members want and need. She will follow that up with drive toward a finer definition of the organization, she said. “Initially I’m going to really focus on getting very clear about our purpose and mission and understanding how that clarity can really drive our goals in terms of growing the membership of our organization.”

Mills announced in August that she was leaving MITX and the area, to move to the West Coast to be with her fiance. Mills, who joined MITX in 1999, started out as director of business development of the group then known as MIMC (Massachusetts Interactive Media Council) becoming executive director in 2005.

When she announced she was leaving MITX, Mills said the new leader has to be someone with knowledge of digital marketing and media, who can be a “thought leader” for the organization – and combine that with an understanding of associations, membership, marketing and retention. Mills said that the organization has certainly found that in Kleiman.

““We couldn’t be more thrilled,” Mills said. “Debi brings just a wealth of industry knowledge and practice to MITX. She has the skills and ability to take the organization to an entirely new level.”
