RFID firm ThingMagic sold to California-based Trimble

By Rodney H. Brown

ThingMagic Inc. has been purchased for an undisclosed amount by California company TrimbleNavigation Ltd., which will put ThingMagic into its Advanced Devices segment.

Based in Cambridge, ThingMagic is a radio frequency identification (RFID) technology maker. The company makes both RFID sensors and readers for use in various markets and industries.

The purchase is characterized in a release as buying “the business of ThingMagic” and nothing is said about whether or not the business will stay in Cambridge, or what will happen to the employees or top officials. Among those are co-founder and CTO Yael Maguire, who was named a Mass High Tech All-Star in 2007.

Since it was founded in 2000, ThingMagic has raised at least $30 million in financing, the most recent being an undisclosed investment in 2008 from In-Q-Tel, the CIA’s venture arm.

Trimble provides applications requiring position or location services for industries such as surveying, construction, agriculture, fleet and asset management, public safety and mapping.
