Five years after he joined Microsoft Corp. as CTO following the Seattle giant’s purchase of his Beverly company Groove Networks Inc., Ray Ozzie will be stepping down from his current role as chief software architect, and eventually retiring from the company.
According to the announcement, in the form of a letter from CEO Steve Ballmer, “the CSA role was unique and I won’t refill the role after Ray’s departure.” The letter did not specify when Ozzie would wrap up his transition work and completely retire from Microsoft.
Groove Networks was acquired in 2005 for an undisclosed amount. Microsoft was the largest investor in the maker of secure collaboration software, which had raised a total of $150 million prior to being bought.
When Bill Gates announced he was leaving Microsoft in 2006, Ozzie was immediately named to a new role, as chief software architect.
