NinePoint Medical snags $33M Series A funding

By Michelle Lang

NinePoint Medical Inc., an in vivo pathology device maker newly headquartered in Cambridge, has closed a $33 million Series A funding round led by Third Rock Ventures and Prospect Venture Partners.

NinePoint Medical officials plan to use the financing to support medical device development and commercialization, using the company’s in vivo pathology platform; to hire 25 new employees within a year; and eventually to begin manufacturing at its Cambridge facility.

The company will initially develop devices for gastrointestinal tract exams that would help doctors see advanced tissue in real time during biopsies and other procedures.

NinePoint also announced Charles Carignan as its president and CEO. He is the former executive vice president and chief medical officer of Novasys Medical Inc., where he helped launch a women’s health medical device. He also served as chief medical officer of Boston Scientific Corp. and as vice president of clinical research and medical affairs at Conceptus.

Third Rock’s investment in NinePoint marks the Boston venture capital firm’s first seed funding and launch of a medical device firm.
