Westford-based communications equipment maker Sonus Networks Inc. has named Raymond P. Dolan as president and CEO, replacing Richard Nottenburg, who had served in those roles since 2008 when he replaced Sonus founder Hassan Ahmed.
When Nottenburg made known his plans to step down back in May, he said he would leave the posts as of March 2011, but Dolan is assuming the president and CEO titles effective immediately, Sonus said. Dolan has also been appointed to the Sonus (Nasdaq: SONS) board of directors.
Dolan most recently served as CEO of Qualcomm/Flarion Technologies, a developer of mobile broadband communications technologies, as well as senior vice president of Qualcomm Inc. He had been chairman and CEO of Flarion before it was acquired by Qualcomm in 2006. Previous to his role at Flarion Technologies, from 1996 to 2000, Dolan was chief operating officer of NextWave Telecom. Prior to that, he spent eight years at BellAtlantic/NYNEX Mobile in various roles, most recently as executive vice president of marketing. He began his career in the telecommunications industry at PacTel Cellular as a manager of network operations. Dolan also served as an officer in the United States Marine Corps and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy with a degree in mechanical engineering. He also holds an MBA from the Columbia University School of Business.
In August, Sonus reported plans to close offices in Canada and Germany and move to a smaller space in New Jersey, all of which will eliminate 12 positions when it is finished by Q1 2011. The moves will allow Sonus to achieve cash savings of approximately $2 million to $2.3 million per year. It will cost the company approximately $3.5 million to $4 million on a pre-tax basis in the second half of fiscal 2010 for lease terminations, severance and related costs.
