Delphi and Witricity's automatic charging for electric vehicles

WiTricity working with Delphi on wireless car charger

By James M. Connolly

Wireless energy developer WiTricity Corp. is working with car battery maker Delphi Automotive LLC to develop automatic charging products for hybrid and electric vehicles.

Watertown-based WiTricity, which has developed technology for the wireless transmission of electricity, will work with Delphi to establish a global infrastructure of charging options for consumer and commercial electric vehicles.

A Delphi official said that a wireless charging system would involve no plugs nor charging cords. Drivers would simply park their electric vehicle over a wireless energy source that sits on the garage floor or is embedded in a paved parking spot so that the system could transfer power to a batter charger on the vehicle, according to a press release.

WiTricity CEO Eric Giler, a 2009 MHT All-Star honoree, said his company’s wireless system can already transfer over 3,300 watts — enough to fully charge an electric car at the same rate as most residential plug-in chargers.

“Charging an electric car should be as easy as parking it in your garage or parking spot,” Giler said in a press release from Delphi. “WiTricity’s high efficiency wireless energy transfer technology is ideally suited for electric vehicle charging, and our partnership with Delphi will help to quickly get this technology deployed in OEM vehicles and infrastructure projects worldwide.”
