NSF grant aids Boston-area high schools in biology curriculum

By Michelle Lang

The National Science Foundation has awarded a $2.2 million grant to MIT associate professor Eric Klopfer and University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education assistant professor Susan Yoon for the creation of a high school biology curriculum that includes the teaching of complex systems.

Dubbed BioGraph: Graphical Programming for Constructing Complex Systems Understanding in Biology, the project will address complex systems, such as evolution or the human nervous system, using graphical programming technology. StarLogo TNG works like a 3D game to enable students to visualize complex systems.

The four-year project has been implemented this month in high-need public schools, predominantly in the Boston area.

Klopfer, the principal investigator of the project, is responsible for leading the design, development, testing and application of the StarLogo TNG technology and curriculum, while Yoon, also a project principal investigator, will lead the design of research data collection and analysis, methodologies, interpretation and dissemination.
