MLSC appoints Borisy, Fuchs, Nelsen to science board

By Michelle Lang

The Massachusetts Life Sciences Center has appointed three new members to its scientific advisory board, including Gary Borisy, director and CEO of the Marine Biological Laboratory; Rainer Fuchs, vice president and executive director of Biogen Idec Innovation Incubator; and Lita Nelsen, director of the MIT technology licensing office.

The board now has 17 members, lead by MLSC chairman Harvey Lodish, MIT professor of biology and bioengineering and member of the Whitehead Institute.

A former president of the American Society for Cell Biology, Borisy sits on the scientific advisory board of Cambridge biotech CombinatoRx Inc. He has won an NIH Merit award and the Carl Zeiss award from the German Society for Cell Biology.

Founder of Biogen Idec Innovation Incubator, Fuchs serves as Biogen Idec’s vice president of R&D information technology. A 10-year Biogen veteran, he holds the chairman of the board role for Provasculon and Escoublac, two Biogen Idec Innovation Incubator companies.

A founder of multiple biotechnology companies in Massachusetts, Nelsen launched technology transfer training organization Praxis Ltd. She has served as president of the Association of University Technology and currently sits on the board of directors at the Massachusetts Technology Development Corp. and Mount Auburn Hospital.

The MLSC is charged with spending $1 billion over ten years as part of Governor Deval Patrick’s Life Sciences Initiative, passed in June of 2008.
