Stem cell leaders Lanza, Kim win $1.9M NIH award

By Michelle Lang

Advanced Cell Technology Inc. chief scientific officer Robert Lanza and Kwang-Soo Kim, of Harvard University and McLean Hospital, have won a National Institutes of Health Director’s Opportunity Award for research in “Translating Basic Science Discoveries into New and Better Treatments.”

The award, given through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, provides $1.9 million to McLean Hospital and CHA Biotech, Stem Cell & Regenerative Medicine International (SCRMI), with which ACT has a joint venture, for the sake of researching protein-induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS) as a source of universal red blood cells and platelets for transfusion. ACT noted in a press release today that the award will support research into iPS stem cell use that avoids the risk of tumor growth and genetic dysfunction, and instead provides a potential source of unlimited blood supply.

In June 2009, Kim led a research team at McLean Hospital that made stem cells out of human skin cells, eliminating the risk of cancer and removing some ethical dilemmas associated with embryonic stem cells.

At Marlborough-based ACT, the company won two patents this month related to its stem cell-derived regenerative technology used to treat eye disorders.
