U.S. 'important' stimulus projects include New England links

By Kyle Alspach

Nine projects with New England ties were named in a White House report on the nation’s most important stimulus-funded projects.

The report, “100 Recovery Act Projects that are Changing America,” cites projects including Boston’s planned $24.7 million wind blade testing facility and the extension of the Amtrak “Downeaster” Service to two more Maine cities.

The nine projects comprise $463.8 million in funding, according to the report. The recipients are:

* The Massachusetts Clean Energy Center, which received the $24.7 million funding for the wind blade testing facility, expected to be completed by February 2011

* The “Downeaster” extension, which will extend the Boston-to-Portland service by 30 miles to include the cities of Freeport and Brunswick

* Reveal Imaging Technologies, based in Bedford, which has received $78 million to produce new explosive detection systems that are used in airports as security screening devices

* The New Bedford Harbor Superfund site, which has received $30 million to accelerate the hazardous waste cleanup at the site

* The Malden Redevelopment Authority, which received $3 million for staff to work on lead paint hazard control projects

* A123 Systems Inc. of Watertown, which received $249 million to build an electric vehicle battery production plant in Livonia, Mich. The factory officially opened this month and will eventually produce 30,000 batteries for electric vehicles a year.

* Beacon Power Corp., based in Tyngsboro, which received a $43 million loan guarantee for its 20-megawatt flywheel energy storage plant in Stephentown, N.Y. The plant is expected to be fully operational by the end of the first quarter of 2011.

* Gorman Roofing Inc. of Cumberland, R.I., which received $500,000 in loans to prevent the layoff of 25 employees

* YouthBuild of Bridgeport, Conn., which received $606,850 to train young people for energy efficient building construction
