Marine Renewable Energy Center wins $1.5M for ocean energy
By Michelle Lang
The New England Marine Renewable Energy Center (MREC) in New Bedford has won a total of $1.5 million in federal grants from the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement. The funds will be split with half of the funds going to MREC’s annual operations and the other half to further offshore wind research and wave- and tide-based renewable energy resources.
MREC is working to develop marine renewable energy with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), the universities of Massachusetts at Amherst and Dartmouth, University of Hawaii and University of Washington. The federal grants will support the group in developing surveying technology for tides, ocean and offshore wind.
Among MREC’s New England ocean energy projects is the formation of the National Offshore Renewable Energy Innovation Zone south of Nantucket to study ocean energy resources. The center is also working with the town of Edgartown on Martha’s Vineyard to develop a tidal energy project on the Muskegat Channel.
The Marine Renewable Energy Center is run by director John Miller who, in June 2009, confirmed a $1 million funding from the U.S. Department of Energy to finance ocean energy research and development.
