KSE, Giner Electrochemical awarded $4.5M DOE funding

By Kyle Alspach

Two Massachusetts companies, which work on technologies related to biofuels and fuel cells, have received a total of $4.5 million in a round of small business research funding from the U.S. Department of Energy.

The funding is part of a nationwide award of $57 million aimed at accelerating the commercialization of clean technologies, and comes from the the DOE’s Small Business Phase 3 “Xlerator” program.

Amherst-based KSE Inc. received $3 million for a project to reduce the reliance on distillation for water removal from biomass-derived ethanol. The project intends to generate both energy and cost savings associated with the water removal process, the DOE said.

Newton-based Giner Electrochemical Systems Inc. received $1.5 million to scale up its process for producing a more stable membrane for use in fuel cells. The process aims to make a membrane that is suitable for freeze/thaw cycling and also for relative humidity cycling during normal fuel cell operations, the DOE said.

Last October, Giner won $2.3 million from the National Institutes of Health and National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences to develop a measurement tool that would assess human exposure to heavy metals such as arsenic, cadmium and lead.
