By Galen Moore

American Tower Corp. (NYSE: AMT) has launched operations in Colombia, the company announced today, and plans to purchase 458 wireless communication tower sites from Telefonica S.A.’s Colombian subsidiary, Colombia Telecomunicaciones S.A. E.S.P. (“Coltel”).

American Tower has already bought use rights for 225 of the sites and plans to secure the remaining 233 by the end of this calendar year. An additional 514 tower facilities are under discussion between the two companies.

The Boston company’s Colombian operation is run through a subsidiary in that country, ATC Sitios de Colombia S.A.S.

Founded in 1995, American Tower is one of the largest owners of broadcast and wireless communications towers in the country, with more than 22,800 sites in the United States, Mexico and Brazil.
