Blackberry maker RIM reportedly buys DataViz for $50M

By Rodney H. Brown

Milford, Conn.-based application developer DataViz Corp. may have been acquired by Blackberry maker Research in Motion Ltd. for $50 million, if Internet reports are true.

According to the Blackberry user site Crackberry.com, “multiple sources” confirmed to them that RIM had acquired DataViz. One of the only confirmations from DataViz that lends any support to the rumor is from a posting on their Facebook page about the fact that they have stopped developing their popular Documents to Go mobile application for the WebOS phone operating system from Palm, now a part of Hewlett-Packard Co.

DataViz officials were unable to be reached via phone or email.

DataViz was founded in 1984 and made its name making products for converting documents and files from Mac format to Windows format. The company last reported to Mass High Tech’s New England Tech Directory that it had approximately 70 employees.

Documents to Go supports Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint reading and editing on mobile apps with its Word to Go, Sheet to Go, Slideshow to Go products, respectively. In addition, DataViz’ products offer mobile access to PDF and Apple iWork documents, as well as other files.
