Kopin wins SBIR award to make nitride electronics materials
By Michelle Lang
Kopin Corp., the Taunton maker of heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) wafers used in mobile devices, has won a $750,000 Phase 2 Small Business Innovative Research contract from the Missile Defense Agency. The two-year award pertains to the making of aluminum indium nitride-based high electron mobility transistors (AlInN HEMTs).
The AlInN electronic materials are expected to improve the power and frequency profile of the HEMTs that play a role in smart phones and mobile devices, Kopin officials noted in a press release, but it is typically considered “challenging to produce.” However, the company said it has achieved record-low sheet resistance in making the materials, and now it plans to use the Phase 2 contract to improve production of AlInN HEMTs for X-band electronics use.
Kopin (Nasdaq: KOPN) also makes HBTs and liquid crystal displays for use in digital cameras, personal video eyewear, camcorders, thermal weapon sights and night vision systems. In April, the company won a $27 million order for high-performance eyepieces for the U.S. Army Thermal Weapon Sight Bridge program.
