Cubist expanding in Lexington, adding new jobs

By Michelle Lang

Cubist Pharmaceuticals Inc. is growing its existing footprint in Lexington, adding 104,000 square feet of lab and administrative space that will house 150 new employees, the company announced today in a ceremony attended by Gov. Deval Patrick and Massachusetts Life Sciences Center President and CEO Susan Windham-Bannister.

The planned expansion includes two new floors for research and development and technical operations; new lab space for medicinal chemistry, crystallography, high-throughput purification, down-stream processing and formulation, toxicology and discovery biology; a new molecular modeling room; and administrative space, executive offices and conference rooms. The additional space will give Cubist a Lexington campus spread over 373,000 square feet.

Cubist received a $1.7 million tax incentive in 2009 from the Life Sciences Center that was intended to help with the company’s Lexington expansion. Tied into the incentive deal, Cubist also agreed to adding 58 new jobs in 2010.

In a separate news announcement today, Cubist promoted Steven C. Gilman, chief scientific officer and senior vice president, discovery and non-clinical development, to executive vice president, research and development. Gilman will keep his position as chief scientific officer.

Cubist develops drug treatments to meet medical needs in acute care. In July, the company’s antibiotic drug Cubicin prompted the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to send letters to patients and doctors warning them about the risk of developing a serious form of pneumonia, linked to Cubicin use.
