Industry: Web-based virtual tours of building interiors
Everyscape Inc.’s 3D, photorealistic tours of interior spaces don’t come cheap, and in a down economy sales prospects seem like a long shot.
But that hasn’t kept away heavyweight investors and strategic partners. The startup hooked up with AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) this August for sales to advertisers on the Yellowpages.com directory site. Also. Korean telco SK Telecom (NYSE: SKM) led a $6 million Series C round, with plans to expand the service to Asia. Everyscape just moved into new headquarters in Newton, with room to double its 50-person headcount. In addition to SK Telecom, backers include Dace Ventures, Draper Fisher Jurvetson and Launchpad Venture Group.
Slick transitions from one room to the next are the “secret sauce” of Everyscape’s virtual tours, said founder Mok Oh. It’s a problem he began working on as a doctoral student at MIT.
Company officials say that EveryScape has done well by abandoning initial plans to do photo-realistic 3D tours of streetscapes and instead focus on business interiors with tours that don’t take hours to download.
From the top, CTO Mok Oh: Speaking about the transition challenge, he said, “How do I create an interactive experience that will really pull people into it and from a web browser be able to walk around. What we have on Everyscape today is a scaled-down version of this.”
