Azuki plans growth with automated mobile video

Azuki Systems Inc.
Location: Acton, Mass.

Phone: 978-844-5100
Date founded: 2007 (as PeerMeta Inc.)
Top executive: John Clancy, CEO
Industry: Video delivery over IP

What started out looking like a Brightcove for mobile is aiming to become a software maker at the core of video delivery over Internet Protocol. Founded in 2007 as PeerMeta Inc., and seeded with $6.6 million from Sigma Partners and Kepha Partners, Azuki Systems first built a tool for automating mobile video distribution to multiple kinds of devices.

Having won marquee customers in digital video publishing, like CBS and Time Warner, the company aims to let wireless service providers bill for content like Apple Inc. does with its iPhone app store. Former Iron Mountain Digital president and Schooner Capital CEO in resident John Clancy was named president and CEO last month. At the time of his hiring, Clancy noted that Azuki wants to take advantage of the fact that mobile devices have become “the de facto first screen for many consumers.”

Azuki was founded by CTO Cheng Wu, who previously founded Acopia Networks and ArrowPoint Communications.

From the top, CTO and founder Cheng Wu: “I think the most significant contribution of Azuki is to make it possible to securely deliver cross-platform mobile video over-the-top over the public Internet at the Internet scale that is similar to how VPN’s have made it possible to transport private data over the public Internet. We make it possible for mobile video what VPN’s have done to private enterprise data.”
