Basho is competing for a slice of the emerging NoSQL approach to database management. These iconoclasts believe the relational database, typically written in the SQL database computer language for transactional applications, won’t scale well enough to serve big web applications. Google and Amazon have created their own non-relational database management systems; Basho and competitors like Cassandra and MongoDB are making this technology available in an open-source format. Founded by former Akamai Technologies engineers, the company’s Riak key/value store is gaining customer adherents – even if the company has had trouble winning over venture capital investors. Last month, the company brought in $1.5 million on a planned $2.5 million Series C round from friends, family and angel investors.
From the top, CEO Earl Galleher: “We are to the database layer what Akamai did at the content layer...Akamai did something extremely innovative in distributing the content layer all around the internet. In large measure, we’ve done nearly precisely the same thing, but at the database layer which is quite a bit more complex, and a much bigger market.”
