A new deal between Amazon.com Inc. and Framingham’s Staples Inc. brings the first E-Ink-based e-reader back to the Bay State. Staples reports its plans to sell all three models of the Kindle beginning sometime this fall.
According to Jevin Eagle, executive vice president of merchandising and marketing at Staples, (Nasdaq: SPLS) the Kindle devices will be available at all 1,550 Staples stores in the Unites States. The three models Staples will offer are the Kindle at $139, the Kindle 3G at $189 and the larger Kindle DX at $379. Staples said it will also carry a full assortment of Kindle accessories.
In April of this year, Amazon announced it was going to sell Kindles through Target stores. Cambridge-based E-Ink Corp. has been supplying the screens for all versions of the Kindle since it was launched in 2007.
Founded in 1997, E Ink had raised more than $150 million in funding before being acquired in June of 2009 for $215 million by Taiwanese display provider Prime View International. Investors include venture firms such as Eastward Capital, FA Technology Ventures and Solstice Capital, as well as corporate investors such as Intel Capital Corp., Motorola Corp. and Toppan Printing Company Ltd. of Japan.
In March, Russell Wilcox, one of the founders of E Ink, stepped down as president, CEO and board director after the sale to Prime View closed. Wilcox was named a Mass High Tech All-Star in November.
